Axel Lindahl has left Östers IF and retired from professional football. The 31-year-old full-back has terminated his contract, which ran until 2027, due to persistent injury problems.
The club confirmed the news on its official website. Sporting director Ola Larsson expressed disappointment at the outcome. "First and foremost, I want to say it's very sad that Axel is forced to end his football career because of an injury," Larsson said.
Lindahl joined Öster ahead of the 2025 season but made only one Allsvenskan appearance before the club's relegation to the Superettan. Injuries have kept him completely off the pitch this season. He explained his decision. "I had very high hopes when I signed for Öster. Unfortunately, an injury stopped me early." Lindahl said.
A career spanning many clubs
His journey took him through Swedish and Norwegian football. After his youth in Lidköping, he played for clubs like Oskarshamns AIK, Jönköpings Södra, and Degerfors IF. A year with Norwegian side FK Bodø/Glimt was followed by a stint at Kalmar FF, then a brief period at BK Häcken before moving to Öster.
Now he looks ahead. "You just have to accept that the career is over. Now the next chapter in life awaits, which I look forward to with great confidence," he added, thanking the club.
For Östers IF, it means one less player in the squad during a tough period. The team sits seventh in the Superettan with 36 points from 25 games. They have lost three matches in a row, most recently 3-2 away to Halmstad, and face an important away fixture against Norrby IF on October 10. Sporting director Larsson concluded by wishing the player luck in his civilian career.
